THE SHOP & STAFF: Slick LA cafe outfitted in typical post-postmodern urbanity: polished concrete floors, various welded steel bits and reclaimed wooden things. Limited seating, and judging from all the laptop-farmers, they have wifi. Bad stuff: Super-high ceilings, dark paint and fixtures throughout, and near-complete lack of windows make the place feel like a cave. And maybe dude was having an off day, but the lone barista was distant and disinterested. Good stuff: the cafe was clean and organized, the outdoor seating area was tiiiight, and there's a local/pastured/organic meat counter next door (Lindy & Grundy). And they're serving coffee from Coava, Sightglass, Temple, and Victrola -- really nice to see Victrola represented outside of Seattle. :) ----- IMA GONNA BUY YOU A: Cappuccino SPECS: Temple's Dharma seasonal espresso (Brazil, Guatemala, and Ethiopia), whole milk, 6oz. black Espresso Parts porcelain -- classy! VISUAL: 3/6 meh. Lacked definition & symmetry, and was served crooked in the cup. (Pick one: the handle is on the left, or the handle is on the right.) But he went for the rosetta on a cap, so points for ballsiness. PRESENTATION: 3/6 Average Filled right, but the plate was chipped and there was no spoon. bah. Details matter. TASTE & TEXTURE: 3/6 Average Correct temperature. Thin, non-persistent foaminess up top, but the milk itself was creamy and moderately sweet. hmm. I'd call it a latte in a cap cup. Average balance between espresso & milk, with some faint blackcurrant flavors. COMMENTS: I really hate to give this drink and the shop itself so many "average" ratings, especially because I get the sense that my experience wasn't typical, but... that's just how it was. Neither the drink nor the shop were bad by any means, but I hoped for better preparation and presentation, and the visual attributes of the shop left me underwhelmed.
